Announcing the help2kids Community Library in Malawi!

A before look at the community library building…we can’t wait to show you the AFTER!
We are very excited to announce that we have begun planning to create a Community Library which will serve Lifuwu Village. In addition to hosting a large collection of books, we will create a beautiful reading space within the building that is located in the main market of the village. We will be looking to bring together villagers of all ages who are interested in relaxing with a good book and increasing their English comprehension level! We are seeking donations for this project to cover startup and operational costs, so we can get this project off the ground as soon as possible!
Our Community Library will be the first of its kind here in Lifuwu, as libraries are not commonly found in Malawi. Our village lacks the infrastructure of larger towns, meaning that the community misses out on services found elsewhere…such as post offices, bigger schools, and large trading centers. Building this library will be a step in the right direction towards building up the area and the services it has to offer.
Another point of inspiration for this project was our awareness of the number of children in Lifuwu who are not attending school. Unfortunately, our education programs cannot reach every single child in the village, many children cannot attend school due to family poverty, and are kept at home to help out around the house with chores. Since help2kids sponsors two nursery schools and supports two primary schools here in the village, we know who our students are. It is the children we do not know who we are now trying to inspire to spend more time learning. The children who wander the village and market rather than spending their mornings in school could greatly benefit from a safe place to spend time reading, and that is what we are going to provide.
Projects like this one don’t just happen overnight, they take the hard work from our team on the ground in Malawi, as well as the assistance of our volunteers and supporters! We have secured the building pictured above, but as you can see, we have a lot of work to do when it comes to beautifying the space. We have a lot of cleaning, painting, and building to do. Once this is complete, we can then stock the library with the books we have collected from volunteer donations, as well as adding bookshelves, reading spots, and things to make the reading room a bit more comfortable for everyone!
