Education Programs
help2kids supports underpriviledged children with English and IT classes.
The Wamato Primary School is a Tanzanian NGO that aims to offer education to children of poor families. More than 300 children from 5 to 15 years old attend the classes at this school in our neighborhood. We support this school by sending volunteers and learning materials to improve the education of the children. Moreover, we offer a lunch to the children who attend our classes in the afternoon.
If you are interested in volunteering at this project, please have a look at our website about volunteering. You can start if you have one month available, and there is no teaching experience or special education required, at least for teaching the young children in smaller groups or even teaching lessons to a single child.
English Classes
We provide additional English classes to around 100 children at the Wamato Primary school. For this reason we also offer a lunch to the children who attend our classes in the afternoon (see picture on the left). In Tanzania it is essential for the youth to learn English well in order to have a chance of a better future. Already the secondary school is taught completely in English - a reason why many children from a poor background fail to attend longer than one year.
The classes usually take 1.5 to 2 hours. The younger children are taught just basic English knowledge, such as colors, animals, nouns, and numbers. With older children, you can slowly start teaching grammar. We also would like to offer additional lessons to children who are falling behind in class; however this depends on the number of volunteers we can employ.
Of course we are always looking for people who are willing to teach English for at least one month. The size of the classes and the age of the children can be arranged according to your wishes and abilities. You can either teach small groups of just 4 or 5 children or bigger groups of up to 50 children.
We also have someone on site to help our volunteers translate English to Swahili, if necessary. According to our experiences, however, it is not really necessary if you teach the younger children just basic vocabulary, which is explained easily (also with the books and materials we are providing). On the left you can find some short video-clips taken during some lessons by our volunteers.
IT Classes
help2kids aims to give the 300-400 children of the Wamato Primary School access to computers and internet. For this reason we provide laptops to the school and our volunteers teach basic IT knowledge three times per week. At the beginning we focus on teaching how to use the keyboard, to type in simple texts, how to open programs or how to use the internet. Later on we also want to use the laptops for didactic learning software so that the children learn English while getting used to the computers.
